The success of this image was due to a little luck, which came in the form of a partial moon that night. Normally having a moon in the night sky will wash out the stars, but I waited until the moon was low in the Western sky and below the treeline. The trees acted as a density filter, reducing the light in the sky, and still adding enough light to show detail in the granite landscape. This photograph only ended up being a 30 second exposure.
